At the annual Music Film Festival, Vienna’s City Hall Square becomes a meeting point for music lovers and night owls - with free film screenings and culinary delicacies. The range of music films shown covers everything from opera to pop.

The "Cinema under the Stars" on Karlsplatz is also free of charge and celebrates its 20th anniversary this year with the Austrian film series "20 years – 20 films". An exciting film has been selected from each year starting with 1996. The composition bears witness to the diversity of Austrian filmmaking. In 2016, the "Cinema under the Stars" also dedicates a series of films to those filmmakers who were driven into exile during the period of National Socialism.

The "Cinema like never before" on the Augartenspitz presents a special line-up of concert and backstage films. At the cinema sessions, classic silent movies will be accompanied by extraordinary live music. Helmut Qualtinger is honored on the 30th anniversary of his death with the screening of his best films (including "The Name of the Rose"). There are also exciting Austrian premieres on the program. Culinary delights of organic quality complete the offering.

The "Cinema on the Roof" of the Main Library on the Gürtel is held under the slogan "High Lights" this year and presents innovations, festival successes, cult films and film classics. A retrospective is dedicated to the well-known American filmmaker Jim Jarmusch. Important music documentaries are represented with "Amy" and "Pulp". One evening a week is dedicated to Austrian film.

The Arena Summer Cinema shows an exciting mix of popular and unusual films. Come and find a comfy spot on the meadow with the blankets provided.

A traveling cinema in the old tradition is the Volxkino. It pitches it tents at unusual locations: between market stalls or municipal buildings, in parks or by subway stations. The focus lies on prize-winning films from around the world and current films from Austria. Admission is free.
