Stable Sales for Rewe Austria
The German food retail group was able to increase its sales moderately last year. The number of employees has increased.
In 2010, the company was present on the Austrian market with 2,475 branches, achieving sales for € 7,04bn (+1.83% compared with 2009). The full domestic product range BILLA, MERKUR, and BIPA recorded slightly stronger growth rates, specifically around 4.22%.
"After we grew clearly during the especially difficult year 2009, we were able to maintain this course in 2010. Especially the full product range business has developed very positively in the past year, the drugstore trade has contributed very significantly to the success with a sales growth of about 36%. The former dynamic growth of the discount sector was greatly reduced in Austria in 2010”, Frank Hensel, Chairman of the Board of REWE International, summarizes the situation.
773 new jobs were created in Austria, totaling 38,412 employees in the domestic market by the end of the year. The number of employees of REWE International has also expanded significantly in other markets managed from Austria (Italy, Bulgaria, Croatia, Romania, Russia, Slovakia, the Czech Republic and Ukraine) to a total of 70,210 by December 31, 2010 (+2413 compared with 2009).
Overall sales on Central and Eastern European markets grew by 3.44% to € 4.8bn. Some markets in Eastern Europe developed especially well, first of all Russia, where REWE International’ sales grew by 34.31% (22.98% currency adjusted). REWE International also achieved sales growth in Ukraine (+25.42%), Slovakia (+6.61%) and the Czech Republic (+8.36%).
