Small Growth in Austrian Winter Season
The current tourism winter season 2011/12 recorded a rise in overnights by 2.1%.
According to Statistics Austria's latest preliminary data, in the first five months of the winter season 2011/12 (November to March) 56.82 million overnights were registered. This means an increase of 2.1% compared to the same period last year. As a result, the second-best winter season ever was recorded.
The number of foreign guests rose by 1.8% to 43.71 million. Domestic guest were up by 3.1% to 13.11 million. Guest from Germany (+1.1%), the U.K. (+4.0%), Switzerland, (+15.7%), Russia (+18.2% recorded a rise. A decline was observed for guests from the Netherlands (-1.4%) and Belgium (-2.5%). The overall positive result in 2011/12 was not affected by a decrease in overnights of 6.6% to 12.13 million in March 2012.
The Minister of Economics, Reinhold Mitterlehner said to be satisfied with the lastest figures. Nevertheless, much effort is necessary to remain a popular tourism region, Mitterlehner emphasized.
