The electors of Saxony were famous for being passionate about collecting.

Above all, August II., "the Strong", (1670-1733) and his son August III. (1696-1763) amassed a considerable collection of art in their Dresden Picture Gallery.

It includes works by Rembrandt, Titian, Bernardo Bellotto, Guido Reni, Anthonis van Dyck, Diego Velázquez and Antoine Watteau.
