Leitl: „Securing Austria´s Top Ranking“
WKO´s President Christoph Leitl calls for reforms. In order retain Austria´s economic position, reforms should be accelerated and taxes should be cut.
„Among the EU members, Austria is a top country. Regarding employment, jobs and the unemployment rate, we rank first. Regarding the GDP per capital, we moved to rank number three recently. With a tax quota of 43.7%, we rank fifth.“ Christoph Leitl explains. However, the high tax quota would be no reason for joy, Leitl added.
According to first estimates for 2011, the GDP per capita in the Member States ranged from 45% to 274% of the EU27 average in 2011. Austria´s GDP per capita corresponds to 129% of the EU average, which is only beaten by the Netherlands (131%) and Luxembourg (274%).
Now, Austria´s position must be defended, he states. Due to the growing uncertainties and the deteriorating economic situation, an active strategy is required, Leitl says.
Leitl expects the EU´s leaders to underline their willingness to continue the austerity policy and to set new growth initiatives. Above all, the high youth unemployment rate should be cut, Leitl says.
WKO´s Deputy President Christoph Matznetter underlined that Austrian exports generate about the half of the gross domestic product. „From this point of view, talking about the exit out of the eurozone or out of the EU would be highly dangerous.“ Matznetter asserted. The consequence would be a massive loss of prosperity and jobs, Matznetter warned.
