Leitl Pushes for Reforms
The President of the Austrian Chamber of Commerce appreciates that actions worsening the Austrian business location conditions were prevented.
“The real economy is still convinced that a tax increase would not have been necessary. Nevertheless, we respect that the austerity package did not include measures, which are really worsening conditions of the Austrian business location.” Leitl comments. For him, reasonability succeeded over enviousness, as the inheritance tax and property taxes were not introduced. These taxes would have caused a burden of € 500m for the Austrian real economy, Leitl says. Moreover, the equity base of domestic companies would be weakened substantially.
Leitl now wants to implement reform steps in order to establish sustainability of the restructuring measures. “In the near future, the next austerity package threatens. We have to implement a major reform of public administration. We have to innovate in order to re-gain leeway for future investments such as education, research and development.” Besides that, Leitl also aims for getting back the “AAA”. “Higher interest rates are a burden for our country”. Leitl says.
The President of the Audit Court, Josef Moser, also appreciates the decisions taken by the government. For Moser, it is a “commitment to save and reduce debts”. However, several plans are highly endangered not be become implemented, like the financial transaction tax or the redemption of illegal income deposited in Switzerland. Moser also calls for structural reforms. “The contribution from the citizens is fixed. But the contribution from the political side is still missing.”
Moser only sees first steps of a structural reform. “What not has been abolished are redundancies and inefficient structures.”
