High Potential for Austrian Investments in Moldova

Austria is one of the most active countries in the CESEE region ranking first in foreign direct investments (FDI) in many countries.

Austria ranks first in FDI in Slovenia with total inward investments of € 10.8bn as well as in Croatia (€ 26.2bn), Bosnia and Herzegovina (€ 4.9bn) and Serbia (€ 12.8bn), according to data provided by Statistik Austria, the statistical office. Moreover Austria ranks second in Romania (€ 52.6bn), Slovakia (€ 37.6bn) and Bulgaria (€ 36.2bn) and third in the Czech Republic (€ 96.2) and Hungary (€ 67.9).

While the country came only at 12th place in Moldova as of the end of 2011, with total inward investments coming at € 2.39bn and a total share of FDI of 2 percent only, there is still potential for growth.

Enterprises are active in industrial production in the fields of petro chemicals, building materials, wood processing, packaging, food and beverages as well as in the banking and finance industry, such as real estate, consulting, and in agriculture, such as farming, forestry and the production of machinery.Among the Austrian companies active in Moldova are Erste Group’s Banca Comerciala Romana, Austrian Airlines, insurance group Grawe, OMV’s Petrom, Raiffeisen Leasing and VIG's Donaris Insurance.

Future fields of business activities to be tackled in the Moldovan economy are further investmentments in the industrial and service sector, infrastructure, IT and communication as well as agriculture and food processing.
