Freight on Danube is Decreasing
Due to a lower water level, freight transport volume on the river Danube decreased by 10% in 2011.
A total of 9.9 million tonnes (t) of freight was transported on the Austrian section of the Danube in the survey year 2011. This means a decrease in freight transport by 1.1 million t (-10.0%) compared to 2010. The total transport performance (i.e. the product of transport volume and distance travelled) was 9.6 billion tonne-kilometres (tkm) (-16.2%). Around 2.1 billion tkm (-10.6%) of this transport performance took place on the Austrian section of the Danube. The number of laden journeys declined from 10 391 to 10 325 (-0,6%).
The international goods receipt was reduced by 10.3% to 5.6 million t compared to the previous year. International goods dispatch showed a decrease in transport volume of 7.3% to 1.5 million t. For transit a drop of 16.8% to 2.3 million t was determined. Only the tonnage in inland transport rose by 23.8% to 0.6 million t in the reference year.
