Austria's Gambling Industry Stagnates
Income of Casinos Austria remained constant in the previous year. Online lotteries grew while traditional lotteries lost ground.
Austrian lotteries only achieved a meager sales growth of 0.3% to 2.64bn in 2010. Although this is a new record, sales have been stagnating for years. Net income fell from € 44.52m to € 34.99m. Operating profits shrunk by € 56.6m to € 44.1m.
Online Gambling shows a slight upward trend. The number of players at the win2day.at portal rose by 10%, sales rose to € 1.075bn, after € 1.07bn in 2009. Slot casinos increased their sales by 10% to € 400m.
Conventional lottery operations suffered however heavy losses. After sales for € 601.3m in 2009, they decreased to € 582m in 2010.
Tax contributions of the gambling establishments fell clearly from € 421m to € 398m. € 1.96bn in winnings were paid to gamblers in 2010.
