Austria Pushes for Danube Strategy
Together with Germany, Slovakia and Bulgaria, Austria wants to implement a common transport strategy for the Danube.
Until 2050, goods traffic will increase by 80% and personnel traffic is expected to grow by 50%. „Now, we have to take the right decisions.“ Alexander Klacska at WKO (Austrian Chamber of Commerce) said on the occasion of talks with Members of the European Parliament. Together, the countries want to implement an „optimal strategy for the Danube region“.
„Industrial enterprises must not shift to the periphery. The settlement at central European traffic intersections must be promoted. At the moment, the inland shipping traffic at the Danube has a capacity utilization of 15%. As a result, there is much potential to become a competitive, safe, efficient and reliable transport route.“ Klacska said. However, the framework conditions must fit in the whole Danube region.
„Only with common solutions we can manage these challenges.“ MEP Hubert Pirker added. „The European Danube strategy and the Danube corridor are absolutely essential as part of the Trans-European Networks.“
