Austria became a member of the United Nations in 1955 and is celebrating 60 years of UN membership in 2015. 70 years ago, the United Nations were founded in San Francisco.

The United Nations are celebrating their 70th anniversary this year.

Austria became a member of the United Nations on 14 December 1955, together with a group of several other States.

Since then, Austria has been an active member of the United Nations and has contributed to its work.

Moreover, Austria was a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for 3 times, lastly from 2009 to 2010.

In 1979, Vienna became one of the – by now- 4 Headquarters of the United Nations.

The Vienna International Centre (VIC) is the seat of a number of different UN institutions.

The UN seat Vienna has developed into an important place for dialogue as well as into a hub for energy and international security questions.
